Inter-Mines Safety and First Aid Competition
On 11th September 2022, two of our students (Audrey Mawuena Asakpo from Year 8 and Nana Akosua Serwaa Bonsu from Year 9), represented Newmont in the student essay segment of this year’s Inter-Mines First Aid and Safety Competition. The Inter-Mines First Aid and Safety Competition is an annual event that is held under the auspices of the Chamber of Mines, with support from the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission and St Johns Ambulance. The competition seeks to underscore the importance of safety in the mining industry and educate employees and host communities on health, first aid and safety practices. The theme for this year’s competition is “Safety is by choice not by chance: choose to stay alive!”
Over the years, students from the host communities have participated in the quiz and essay writing competitions at the zonal and national levels. This is the first time that ISA students were involved in this competition. This year’s competition was held at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) in Accra and students had to write a story that illustrates that "Chance Takers are Accident Makers". After the competition, they joined the Newmont team in the GBC studios for “‘What Do You Know”, one of Ghana's oldest shows presented by the ace quiz master Dan Afari Yeboah. The students travelled to Accra on Saturday, 10th September 2022 and returned to MKV on Monday, 12th September 2022. They were chaperoned by Ms. Meg Sutcliffe, the Principal of the International School of Ahafo and received technical assistance from Mr. Mark Kafui Yaotse, the English teacher. While at the airport, they met Nana Ama McBrown, a renowned Ghanaian actress and TV presenter.
At Friday’s assembly, Mr. Solomon Oduro-Danso, Health and Safety Superintendent - Underground Operations at Newmont Ahafo Mine spoke to all of the students about the competition and presented the girls with prizes, and gifts to Mr. Yaotse, Ms. Sutcliffe and staff for supporting the girls.
