School Expansion 2020

Date: 28 Dec 2020 // By: Rita Dzide-Tei

Following the successful implementation of the International School of Ahafo’s (ISA) virtual school, Newmont is preparing to open up the school to all Newmont Ghana employees who wish to enroll their children in the school.ISA was originally set up to educate children of the Ahafo mine’s Senior Managers who reside at Mensah Kumta Village (MKV). The school is a top-rated international school with high academic standards that compare to any international school around the world.

The virtual school began in August 2020 and has been tremendously successful with about 100 students participating. It provided the opportunity for Newmont employees’ dependents, who live outside MKV, to experience ISA and continue learning despite the COVID-19 restrictions. Feedback from teachers, students and parents has been incredible and we cannot wait to begin in-person in 2021 once the government of Ghana permits the re-opening of schools.

Newmont is now extending access to the school to dependents of all Newmont Ghana employees who meet the eligibility criteria.  This means that Accra and Akyem employees are eligible to apply for admission for their children if they have their own accommodation and transportation arrangements near the school.

The International School of Ahafo is open to all Newmont Ghana Ahafo Project families and children of full-time teachers at ISA. Students moving to the area are accepted throughout the year, although entry at the beginning of term is encouraged, where possible. An overview of our admissions process has been provided below and the process must be successfully completed before a student is considered for enrolment.

Classes and Eligibility

For the 2020/2021 academic year, the school has classes from Reception (KG2) to Year 8 (JHS 2). Year 9 is not offered in the 2020-2021 academic year, but will be offered in the future. Nursery will only be open to MKV families. ISA welcomes applications from all age-appropriate children.
