Workshops for Local Schools
In response to further community requests for help, the school has added teacher training workshops to its community service project suite for local schools. On Thursday, 1st November 2018, Mrs. Yvette Jansen Van Rensburg, the Early Years teacher, and Ms. Obaa Yaa Owusu-Ansah organised our maiden workshop for twenty-one teachers from two local schools, the Noble Family School and Jaylis School.
This exercise is part of efforts to ensure maximum impact and sustainability of the support provided for local schools. The emphasis is on sharing best practices as to how things could be done differently in the classroom to ensure that students in supported schools can succeed against all the odds. The first workshop focused on fine motor and gross motor skills, making children feel better and strategies for dealing with difficult children.
Following a successful maiden workshop last year, the school organised another workshop on Teaching Phonics (Sounds) for twenty teachers and supervisors from three local schools: Jaylis School, Noble Family School and K2 Methodist School. The workshop was held on Thursday, 31st January 2019 at 1.30pm prompt in the Sankofa classroom and was facilitated by the class teacher, Mrs. van Rensburg with support from Ms. Owusu-Ansah
This session focused on how to get started with the prerequisite activities of implementing a systematic Phonics programme and the progression into learning the letter sounds, blending and segmenting words etc. When children learn how to apply these skills accurately and fluently, it will support their daily reading and writing activities.
