Co-curricular Activities

Students have opportunities to solidify their learning and understanding of the world with real-life experiences. Field trips and hands on learning make concepts more memorable.

Health and Safety

The Sick Bay is well equipped and resourced by the Newmont Clinic.  The Sick Bay and defibrillator are checked regularly by the paramedic from the Newmont Clinic.  Fire drills take place at least twice each year. The Newmont Emergency Response Team responds to at least one fire drill each year and thoroughly checks the procedures and equipment

Clubs

Clubs are offered throughout the year and students can choose form a wide variety of offerings. Clubs which have been offered include Chess, ballet, art and craft, tie dying, football, drama, spy training, public speaking, Scouts, cooking, coding, needle work, Zumba, dance, basketball, tennis, gardening, board games, etiquette and manners, design and technology, etc.

Sustainability

As part of their education, students are encouraged to reflect and act on their responsibility for the environment and a sustainable future.

Student Council

Student Council members are elected by their peers annually. The school acts on students’ suggestions and proposals, where feasible. As a result, many of the special events that happen in school have originated from ideas presented at Student Council meetings. The Student Council organises fundraising events in support of community service projects in the local community.

Community Service

The school’s setting has great contrasts. On one hand, there is MKV, a community exclusive to Newmont families with state-of-the-art facilities, including the school. On another just outside the gate, there are authentic Ghanaian villages with people and experiences very different from what children in MKV are used to. This stark reality presents unique opportunities for students to acknowledge the diversity of life, interact with the locals, and develop compassion and a spirit of service. A commitment to service permeates the ethos of student life and enriches the curriculum.

Some of our recent community service projects are reading and crafts with Merister School, collaborating with the Social Welfare Department on the donation of clothes, food and school supplies to our friends, collaborating with the MKV Ladies, on Pad a Girl project to donate sanitary towels and provide menstrual health hygiene support for girls in under-privileged schools

Our Community Impact

Projects

Community service learning is a core part of our school culture. Over the years, the Student Council has led various fundraising events, with proceeds supporting a wide range of projects aimed at uplifting our local communities. Through these experiences, our students not only demonstrate empathy and leadership but also develop a deeper understanding of the communities they are part of.

Past initiatives include the donation of school supplies to nearby schools, a science teaching workshop for local teachers, and contributions of books and teaching resources to K2 Methodist School and Noble Family School. Our students have also supported the Methodist School through breakfast programmes and “Girl Talk” sessions, and played a key role in the refurbishment of the Children’s Ward at St. Elizabeth Hospital.

More recent projects include clean-up activities in MKV, donation of food and clothing to vulnerable families in collaboration with the Asutifi North District Department of Social Welfare, partnering with MKV ladies to donate sanitary pads and menstrual health education to girls in local schools,  partnering with the District Directorate of Education to run a play-based learning workshop for Early Years teachers in local schools, donation of school supplies and reading with over seven remote local schools, and donating essential items to the Mums Love Orphanage in Duayaw Nkwanta.
